With the recent increase in the population of international scholars in the UK, I keep wondering what local universities in Africa are up to. Its quite alarming to hear that a good number of these candidates are scholarship recipients and interestingly they are being picked by the co-operate establishments even before they complete their studies. Greater number of the candidates who make it on their own into the UK to study, also find themselves in such category as well. Considering this scenario, you can then agree with me that some of the figure heads are being taken away and most do not even find there way back towards Africa in terms of the development of their countries of origin.
With this in mind, I am particular urged to ask, where lies the state of Africa? Taking Nigeria alone as a case study, you will discover that just one school in the UK might have close to 300 scholars both for the undergraduate and post-graduate degree programme. Yes, they are destined to succeed because they have counted it all gain having the privilege of leaving to study in a more secured environment. However, they all strive to be recruited by one firm or the other.
The issue now lies in what can be made of our local institutions to meet up with this internationally recognised standard?
In my humble submission, I will advice that the Institution look inward to recruit hands that have been certified by the internationally recorgnised institutions. Again, the firms in our local countries should also develop the attitude of recruiting these scholars and possible sending them to their home countries to enhance their products performance.
I believe much of the awareness programmes we are talking about will be better of understood if we have these graduates going back home to practice what they have really been exposed to during their time of study.
